Haven of Hope Christian Service (Haven of Hope) launched an innovative program to support active aging among elderly in Tseung Kwan O, funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. This initiative involved distributing 600+ tablets, each equipped with the eFlex platform, a digital solution designed to keep seniors engaged, informed, and connected.

The eFlex platform serves as a central hub, allowing elderly members to easily access community events, read valuable articles, and stay updated on important information. It also empowers them to input personal health statistics, promoting health monitoring and independence. Built with a robust backend system, eFlex ensures reliability and scalability, making it a powerful tool for Haven of Hope’s commitment to enhancing well-being and community connections among Hong Kong’s elderly.

The Challenge

Creating a comprehensive and efficient ecosystem to enhance elderly well-being

The challenge was to create a holistic and efficient ecosystem that enhances the well-being of the elderly while supporting the operational needs of center staff. This system needed to empower seniors to stay active, track their health, and engage in ongoing learning, all contributing to their independence and quality of life. At the same time, the platform had to provide staff with monthly statistics, offering valuable insights to improve service delivery and foster stronger connections with residents.

Balancing these goals required a comprehensive approach that integrates both senior well-being and staff efficiency, resulting in a sustainable ecosystem that meets the needs of both groups.

The Solution

Developing a comprehensive app for the elderly and a robust backend to streamline staff workflows

The eFlex app was designed to empower elderly members, making it easy for them to connect with community events, access valuable articles and videos, and track their health by inputting vital statistics. This resulting platform enhances engagement and supports active aging, all within a user-friendly interface.

At the same time, a backend system was developed to support Haven of Hope’s ecosystem. This system enables efficient management of content, events, news, and health resources, while an API integration allows seamless communication between Haven of Hope’s internal event system and eFlex. Through this integration, events created in Haven of Hope’s system are automatically synchronized with eFlex, and member registrations on eFlex are sent back to the internal system, ensuring data consistency across platforms.

Features like attendance tracking and click-rate analytics provide staff with actionable insights, enabling them to improve service delivery and tailor content to the needs of residents.

Designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind, eFlex ensures that elderly residents can navigate and engage with the platform confidently. By employing intuitive design principles, the interface offers a clear and inviting layout, allowing users to connect with events, access resources, and input health data with ease.

This emphasis on user-friendliness not only enhances the digital experience but also encourages active participation, helping elderly residents stay engaged and connected with their community in an accessible and enjoyable way.

Easy bookmarking of favorite articles for later reading or quick reference

The eFlex platform includes a bookmarking feature that allows elderly users to save articles, and videos, for quick and convenient access. With just a tap, users can mark content they find valuable, storing it in their profile for easy retrieval at any time. This feature supports continuous learning and encourages engagement by providing a simple way to revisit health, wellness, and educational content at their own pace.

By making knowledge-based resources easily accessible, eFlex empowers elderly members to stay informed and connected with learning opportunities from their community center.

Keeping elderly members informed and engaged with important updates

The eFlex platform features an announcements and news section designed to keep elderly members connected and up-to-date with essential information from the center. With a user-friendly interface and intuitive navigation, posts are displayed in a chronological format, allowing users to easily browse recent updates. Important announcements can also be pinned at the top for quick access, ensuring critical information stands out.

This feature fosters a sense of community and helps elderly users stay engaged with center activities, news, and updates, enhancing their connection with the Haven of Hope community.

Staff Backend

Tracking Zoom attendance rates for insights into the level of participation and engagements in virtual events

The eFlex platform’s backend system allows Haven of Hope staff to monitor participation in both virtual and in-person events. For Zoom sessions, attendance is logged when a member clicks the event link to open Zoom, providing a record of virtual engagement. Additionally, staff can manually record attendance for offline events, ensuring comprehensive tracking across all types of activities.

These attendance records can be stored, analyzed, and used to generate reports, offering valuable insights into resident engagement levels. This data enables staff to better understand resident interests and optimize programming to foster greater participation in future events.

The eFlex platform’s backend offers detailed click-rate tracking across multiple content types, including events, articles, news, and shortcuts. By distinguishing between member and non-member clicks, the platform provides Haven of Hope staff with valuable insights into the engagement levels and interests of different user groups.

These click-rate statistics empower staff to evaluate the effectiveness of their communication strategies and identify popular topics and resources. With a clear breakdown of user engagement, staff can tailor content more effectively to meet the needs of the community. The ability to download and analyze detailed attendance and click data further enhances decision-making, supporting a data-driven approach to resident engagement.

Initial Concepts

Refining initial concepts to meet user expectations

Each design iteration was crafted to enhance visual appeal and align the interface with users' needs and expectations. Through a series of adjustments, we focused on creating a layout that balances aesthetics with functionality, ensuring that elderly users can intuitively navigate and interact with the platform.

These initial concepts served as a foundation, guiding the development of a user-friendly experience that emphasizes clarity and accessibility, all while incorporating valuable features like event highlights, quick links, and health tracking. This iterative approach ensured that the final design truly resonated with the needs of Haven of Hope’s elderly community.

Wireframe to Final Interface

Evolving wireframes into an engaging, user-friendly interface

To ensure a smooth and intuitive user journey within eFlex, we developed detailed wireframes for both the frontend and backend interfaces. Each iteration aimed to visualize the flow and functionality, allowing us to refine the layout and ensure each element served a clear purpose. This iterative process guided users from one screen or action to another seamlessly, creating a logical and engaging experience.

Through careful planning and user-centric adjustments, the final design captures the essence of the wireframes while enhancing usability. This approach allowed us to maintain consistency in the user journey, ultimately delivering an interface that feels intuitive and aligned with the expectations of the elderly users and staff.
